The Yellow Wallpaper Example The Yellow Wallpaper – Book Report/Review Example The Yellow Wallpaper The Yellow Wallpaper The book â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† is a hyperbolic account of private life experiences of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Shortly after giving birth to her daughter in 1887, depression and fatigue riddled Gilman’s life. Gilman was referred to a 19th century women’s disorder specialist, Silas Weir Witchel, who diagnosed her with neurasthenia thereby prescribing â€Å"rest cure† for her. The nervous disease, for which the narrator was a prey, was common among women in the nineteenth century.The narrator and her husband, John, rent a wonderful house to spend their summer. Unfortunately, the narrator is quite uncomfortable with the room. The narrator hallucinates that there is a woman trapped in the wallpaper in the room and tears down the wallpaper in a bid to free the woman. After reaping the wallpaper apart, the narrator feels liberated. The wallpaper thus symbolizes imprisonment of the female gender within domestic orb . By tearing the wallpaper, the narrator reclaims her identity and feels liberated.Several themes emerge from the narrator’s story. The major themes in the book are the domestic sphere as women’s prison, the role of women in the society during the nineteenth century, the rest therapy, creativity against rationality, and the sun versus the moonlight, which denotes John’s tight work schedule.There are numerous terminologies used such as arabesque, which means an intricate motif or spiraling line, arbor, meaning a latticework haven tangled using vines and leaves, and Chintz, meaning a cotton fabric that is printed among many others. Some important questions to ask are: how does the narrator relate with the wallpaper in the story? What is gender role in the 19th century? The story portrays female gender role as domestic. They were expected to take care of the homes and family while males are the breadwinners of their family and seek work to sustain their families. A doctor’s capability of knowing what one was suffering from heavily depended on his observation of change in behavior of the victim.

Animal Abuse Facts and Information Within the animal protection movement, the term animal abuse is used to describe any use or treatment of animals that seems unnecessarily cruel, regardless of whether the act is against the law. The term animal cruelty is sometimes used interchangeably with animal abuse, but animal cruelty is also a legal term that describes acts of animal abuse that are against the law. The state laws that protect animals from abuse are referred to as animal cruelty statutes. Abuse Standards for Farm Animals The term animal abuse can also describe violent or neglectful actions against pets or wildlife. In cases of wildlife or pets, these animals are more likely to be protected or are better protected than farmed animals under the law. If cats, dogs or wild animals were treated the same as cows, pigs, and chickens in factory farms, the people involved would likely be convicted of animal cruelty. Animal advocates consider factory farming practices like debeaking, the use of veal crates or tail docking to be animal abuse, but these practices are legal almost everywhere. While many people would call these practices cruel, they do not constitute animal cruelty under the law in most jurisdictions but fit the term animal abuse in many peoples minds. Animal rights activists oppose not only animal abuse and animal cruelty, but any use of animals. For animal rights activists, the issue is not about abuse or cruelty; its about domination and oppression, no matter how well the animals are treated, no matter how big the cages are, and no matter how much anesthesia they are given before painful procedures. Laws Against Animal Cruelty The legal definition of animal cruelty  varies from state to state, as do the penalties and punishments. Most states have exemptions for wildlife, animals in laboratories, and common agricultural practices, such as debeaking or castration. Some states exempt rodeos, zoos, circuses and pest control. Others may have separate laws banning practices like cockfighting, dogfighting, or horse slaughter. If someone is found guilty of animal cruelty, most states provide for the seizure of the animals and reimbursement for expenses for the animals care. Some allow counseling or community service as part of the sentencing, and about half have felony penalties. Federal Tracking of Animal Cruelty Although there are no federal statutes against animal abuse or animal cruelty, the FBI tracks and collects information about acts of animal cruelty from participating law enforcement agencies across the country. These can include neglect, torture, organized abuse and even sexual abuse of animals. The FBI used to include acts of animal cruelty into an all other offenses category, which did not give much insight into the nature and frequency of such acts.   The FBIs motivation for tracking acts of animal cruelty stems from the belief that many who practice such behavior may also be abusing children or other people. Many high-profile serial killers began their violent acts by harming or killing animals, according to law enforcement.

The Role Motivation of Motivation in Curiosity and Creativity - Essay Example In the classroom, motivation plays a significant role in learning in which in order for a student to attain its maximum, he must be an active participant in the learning process. He should focus his attention on the learning tasks and perceive it as a meaningful whole. He should be able to see the significance, meanings, implications, and applications that will make a given experience understandable leading to the reinterpretation of his behavior when they are not attained. All these can be possibly undertaken if the individual possesses a strong level of motivation. Again, curiosity plays the role of a buffer object to motivation. In the teaching-learning process, the learner needs to be motivated in order to undertake all academic tasks successfully. The most effective learning takes place when there is a maximum level of mental activity, which is attained through strong motivation; hence, motivation is basic to learning. Motivation is said to be a process in which the individual's attention and interest are aroused and directed toward definite goals (Gawel 2006), to the extent that his basic and acquired needs are involved. An individual is born with certain basic needs that seek expression and the extent to which he seeks these needs is conditioned by environmental influences and experiences. These experientially modified needs become the motivators of the individual, alongside stimuli that capture his curiosity and interests. Man possesses a built-in mechanism that pushes him to move forward, accomplish a certain task, and achieve a goal. By doing so, he intrinsically feels a certain degree of sense of achievement and a self-validation that erases self-doubts. Curiosity is the starting point of this, trailing the individual towards the path of motivation, which in turn, leads him to the attainment of his goals. Maslow's hierarchy of needs gives comprehensive scrutiny of how a felt need motivates an individual to accomplish it and satisfy the next levels thereafter. His theory clearly shows that the felt need is the element that makes the individual become motivated in acting upon certain tasks. The learning environment should always foster a felt need, commonly through creativity and curiosity, that the learners would, in turn, be motivated to satisfy it.Â
